The Department of Biology at Tufts University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Immunology to begin September 1, 2026. This faculty member will be expected to establish and maintain a well-funded research program with an emphasis on immune responses to evolving pathogens and symbionts, innate immunity, or immunological changes across the host lifespan. Research programs that focus on evolutionary immunology of natural systems and non-model organisms/non-human systems are welcome.

Preference will be given to candidates who synergize with existing department strengths in microbiology, virology, aging, ecology, physiology, and evolution. Topics could include, but are not limited to, host-microbe interactions, host-pathogen interactions, mucosal immunology, evolutionary immunology, or the immunology of aging. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong potential for extramural funding of their research and the ability to mentor research trainees at the post-graduate, graduate, and undergraduate levels.

Qualifications

We seek a candidate with a strong potential for effective teaching who has a demonstrated or invested interest in evidence-based, student-centered pedagogical techniques and developing inclusive classrooms. They should clearly describe how they will use effective teaching and mentoring to promote success and career enhancement of Tufts students. Instructional duties will include a semester-long immunology lecture course for undergraduates, in addition to teaching or co-teaching an undergraduate or graduate course in their area of expertise.

This search is part of a strategic, cross-university cluster hiring initiative in Infection and Immunity, a strategic research priority focused on addressing some of the most pressing global health challenges. This effort fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Dental Medicine, Engineering, Medicine, the Fletcher School, the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.

Although this position is based in the Biology Department on the Medford campus (which can support BSL-1 and 2 level research), cross-Tufts collaborations within and beyond the cluster are encouraged.

A Ph.D. and postdoctoral research experience in a field related to immunology is required.

Application Instructions

All applications are submitted via Interfolio, at https://apply.interfolio.com/175521. and should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests and plans, and statement of teaching experience and philosophy. Three letters of recommendation should be uploaded directly by recommenders to Interfolio. In addition, submission of 1-3 publications that illustrate the candidate’s research breadth is encouraged. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
