About This Department
The Department’s mission is to improve health and reduce health disparities in local communities, the state of Maryland, and the nation. This is accomplished by examining environmental, social and behavioral, biological, and genetic factors using established epidemiological and quantitative methods, as well as developing new scientifically grounded approaches, that are applied to identifying determinants of health and discovering and evaluating primary and secondary prevention strategies for chronic diseases and infectious diseases. The Department offers an MPH degree in epidemiology, and a PhD degree in epidemiology, an MPH degree in biostatistics, and a PhD degree in biostatistics and bioinformatics (jointly offered with the Department of Mathematics). The department is committed to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) among students, faculty and staff. The position represents a unique opportunity to join this diverse and thriving department and contribute to an exciting research agenda and graduate student training program. The University of Maryland School of Public Health is driven by a passion to break down the barriers that keep individuals, families, communities and populations from attaining optimum health and wellness. The School is committed to finding new and better ways to promote health, prevent disease and prolong active, high-quality lives. There are so many issues that impact health — including discrimination, violence, poverty, obesity, climate change, substance abuse, and aging. The School of Public Health, located at one of the nation’s leading public research universities, offers an unusual breadth of expertise to explore these issues through public health disciplines, and lenses as varied as engineering, arts and humanities, business and public policy. Built on a foundation of disciplines that originated over 150 years ago with the formation of the University of Maryland, the School of Public Health was founded in 2007 and is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. It is the only accredited school of public health at a public university in the Washington, DC/Maryland/Virginia region, offering an affordable education with outstanding professional development opportunities. The School’s vision is “to be a leader in the discovery, application and dissemination of public health knowledge in the State of Maryland, the nation and the world.” The successful candidate will contribute to fulfilling this vision. A wide range of collaborative opportunities exist at the University with nearby federal, state and local government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other academic institutions. Our faculty members also interact with faculty in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB), the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM), the Maryland Population Research Center (MPRC), the Maryland Institute of Applied Environmental Health (MIAEH), and the Biostatistics and Risk Assessment Center (BRAC), University of Maryland School of Medicine at Baltimore, as well as with researchers in other applied fields. |
