THE POSITION: 

One tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level is available for individuals with a strong background in Public Health and/or health determinant-related fields. Applicants should have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and potential for excellence in one or more research areas relating to Community-engaged Research, Health Disparities/Health Equity, Health Data, Chronic and Infectious Diseases, Prevention Interventions, health policy, and evaluation or similar areas of research related to health education or global health. Individuals are encouraged to describe all areas for which they have demonstrated expertise.  Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate (e.g., PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD, etc.) in Public Health or a closely related field is required. ABD candidates will be considered, but must have completed the doctorate at time of appointment (August 2025). The candidate should have a demonstrated record of success in teaching and research commensurate with the qualifications for Assistant Professor at CSUSM. Experience in teaching, research or other creative activities, and the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with colleagues on an ethnically and culturally diverse campus is required. Candidate must have experience working with undergraduate college level students and practical experience in preparing manuscripts and grant proposals.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and apply general public health concepts toward one of our offered concentrations in health promotion and health education or global health . Ability to collaborate with other faculty to develop, implement, and evaluate community-engaged research and service learning projects is highly preferable. Preference is given to applicants with demonstrated multicultural intelligence and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and/or service.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Key tasks may include (but are not limited to):

  • Serves as classroom faculty and teaches undergraduate core and concentration courses.
  • Works with faculty and staff to assist in the development of overall plans and strategies for the public health department.
  • Serves as preceptor for or member of undergraduate capstone project committees.
  • Collaborates with faculty in academic advisement, mentoring, and counseling of students and in the coordination of practicum and integrative learning experiences.
  • Facilitates faculty and student exchanges in public health research including grant applications for external funding.
  • Participates in communications with community partners/collaborators, community leaders, and scholars.
  • Serves on program, school, college and/or university committees at CSUSM.
