Job Description

The Joint School of Public Health (JSPH) at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research (ADR), with a desired start date in the Summer or Fall of 2025. The key responsibility of this position is to provide executive level leadership in the development and enhancement of the JSPH research enterprise. This is a leadership position and a 12-month senior faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor rank, with tenure.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
A terminal doctoral degree (Ph.D., Dr. P.H., or Sc.D.) in a public health discipline or an M.D. with a master’s degree from an accredited School of Public Health.

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

Qualify for an appointment at the Associate or Full Professor rank with tenure:
    1. Demonstrate a significant scholarly record of publications in a public health discipline.
    2. Demonstrate successful acquisition and sustainability of external funding and grants, including investigator-initiated or unsolicited grants.
    3. Demonstrate successful grant and project management as a Principal Investigator.
    4. Have a significant experience with effectively mentoring faculty in their research efforts.
    5. Have administrative experience in an academic setting.
    6. Have experience with strategic planning, including articulation of a clear vision for research development in an academic setting, optimizing resource utilization, and securing new resources.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant knowledge on current federal funding agency strategic initiatives and focus areas.
  • Experience with budgeting for research projects and initiatives, including approaches for optimizing existing resources
  • Ability to work with members of the leadership team to address human resource (HR) problems and issues, including research project staffing, contracts, and best practices.
  • Ability to assist with navigating issues related to research regulatory requirements, including human subjects, animal care and use, and/or biohazard requirements.
  • Experience with identifying and securing new resources to facilitate/elevate faculty led research programs, including familiarity with public health entrepreneurism and strategies for promoting research entrepreneurship.
