Overview
Tufts Industrial Hygiene (IH) is part of the Research Safety and Regulatory Programs (RS&RP) unit of the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and promotes health, safety and environmental protection in teaching, research, public service and administrative activities by providing training, advice and other compliance assistance to all members of the University community.
Industrial Hygiene staff provides technical and regulatory services in the areas of public health, environmental health, occupational safety and health (OSH), environmental protection and fire safety. The goal is to assist all members of the Tufts community in achieving safe conditions to work, learn and live at all times. It is also to minimize the impact of Tufts activities and operations on the environment and assist the Tufts community in achieving compliance with all safety, health and environmental regulations and laws that pertain to any and all activities conducted on any Tufts University campus.
What You'll Do
The Workplace Safety Manager is the first-line contact in all matters of public health, occupational safety and health, fire safety and environmental protection for the faculty, staff, students, visitors, contractors and regulatory agents for the Medford campus. The Workplace Safety Manager can provide guidance on non-laboratory health, safety and environmental matters.
Responsibilities include:
- Serves as the primary contact for OSHA and other OSH regulatory agencies outside the laboratory
- Acts as the designated expert on OSHA Safety regulations in 1910 and 1926. Conduct job safety analyses for all high hazard jobs on each campus as requested by supervisors
- Conducts accident investigations of all public and employee accidents that occur on each campus
- Performs basic industrial hygiene workplace surveys in the areas of chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic agents in response to requests and following accidents, incidents and releases of hazardous materials under the guidance of the Senior Industrial Hygienist
- Guides specific tasks including workplace air sampling for hazardous materials, testing of ventilation systems and respirator training and fit-testing
- Organizes and delivers training programs as required by OSHA and other legal jurisdictions including new employee orientation
- Provides consultation and training services in all basic areas of occupational safety and health, environmental protection, public environmental health and fire safety
- Facilitates all training activities on the assigned campus
- Assists the Environmental Manager in operating the campus-wide chemical and medical waste program
- Guides and advises the contract staff that collects, packages and transports hazardous waste on campus and to off campus treatment and disposal facilities (TSDF) in accordance with contracts. Specific tasks include oversight of asbestos, lead, PCB and other hazardous materials abatement projects with the oversight of the Senior Industrial Hygienist
- Acts as an advisor to Tufts Public Safety or Public Agency Incident Commander on all reports of spills, splashes, releases or other incidents involving hazardous materials
- Provides contact information for hazmat responders and provides on-scene guidance to Tufts, Contract and Public Safety responders to emergency conditions until emergency conditions eliminated and remediation is implemented
- Reviews all applicable public health laws and regulations for Medford/Somerville in the areas of water quality, wastewater systems, food safety and sanitation, pest control, noise, communicable diseases, indoor air quality and other applicable public health laws and regulations
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge and experience typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene or science or engineering work and minimum of 3 years’ experience
- Certified, registered or licensed, or eligible in at least one area of public health, environmental protection, and/or occupational safety and health (including industrial hygiene) field
- Such certifications include Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager. If eligible for such certification, a date for completion will be required
- Candidates will have current hazardous waste training as required for large quantity generators under RCRA/MA DEP and DOT/IATA training for transportation and shipment of hazardous materials
- Must be able to pass an occupational medical examination with ability to wear respiratory protective devices
- Microsoft Office computer literacy required
Preferred Qualifications:
- The primary subject area is occupational safety and health, hence training and experience in its subdisciplines such as occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health, and ergonomics is preferred
- On-the-job training is acceptable for subject areas outside the primary area of expertise
Pay Range
Minimum $70,000.00, Midpoint $87,550.00, Maximum $105,100.00
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
