The University of Arkansas for Medical Science (UAMS) seeks a dynamic and innovative academic leader with a national reputation and strong interpersonal skills to serve as the next Dean of its College of Health Professions (CHP). The Dean is responsible for ensuring the highest quality academic, administrative, research, and fiscal leadership for the CHP, including strategic planning, continuous quality assessment, student and faculty recruitment/retention and diversity, resource development and allocation, and representation to external entities.

The Dean of the College of Health Professions will have responsibilities for program development, fundraising, curriculum, hiring/firing of faculty/staff and disciplining of faculty/students, annual evaluations for the department chairs and associate deans, serving on appropriate UAMS committees and representing the College in the Chancellor’s Cabinet and other state and national associations, and all budgetary matters for the College. The duties of the Dean of the College of Health Professions contribute in the effort to further the mission of UAMS: To improve the health, health care and well-being of Arkansans and of others in the region, nation and world.

About the UAMS College of Health Professions:

The UAMS College of Health Professions is the primary source of education for allied health professionals in Arkansas, with 19 programs offering degrees ranging from certificates to doctoral degrees. The college includes an enrollment of 616 students (369 undergraduate and 247 graduate), six dental residents and 136 faculty/staff members.

The college’s departments include Audiology and Speech Pathology, Dental Hygiene, Dietetics and Nutrition, Emergency Medical Services, Genetic Counseling, Health Information Management, Imaging and Radiation Sciences (includes sonography, nuclear medicine imaging and radiologic imaging), Laboratory Sciences (includes cytotechnology and medical laboratory sciences), Occupational Therapy (under development), Ophthalmic Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, and Respiratory and Surgical Technology (includes respiratory therapy and surgical technology). The college also is home to the Center for Dental Education, which includes a general practice residency program and operates an oral health clinic.

The Candidate Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a Doctoral Degree in a field relevant to the CHP and 5 or more years in a full-time faculty position with credentials required for an appointment as a full professor with tenure, a strong record of senior leadership and administrative experience in an academic health sciences center or equivalent setting (such as a Dean, Department Chair, Program Director, Division Chief, etc.), and strong financial and budgetary oversight experience. The candidate should have: proven success in recruitment, retention and development of a diverse faculty and student body, mentoring and strategic planning; demonstrated experience in philanthropic efforts; and a record of academic scholarship including research and publications. Important qualifications also include proven experience in contributing to research publications, presenting on a national level and obtaining extramural grant funding. The person must have successful experience in accreditation, exceptional written and oral communication skills, and an understanding and vision for the changing landscape of education, research and health care delivery.
